Cover Letters

My philosophy when it comes to cover letters: the hiring decision-makers who want to read your cover letter are going to want a cover letter that doesn't waste their time. Try to write your cover letters for these people.

I like to think of a resume as covering the past, and the cover letter as covering the future. Resumes are reflection documents - they document the evidence of your experience and expertise. The best cover letters are future-leaning - they can document your critical thinking and your storytelling abilities. They can show how you approach problems, especially if (pro-tip!) those problems look like the problems you'll likely face in the role you're applying to.

Cover letters can give your decision-maker a taste of the person you would be if they took a chance in hiring you. I'm a huge believer in cover letters, and I encourage every job seeker to make a regular habit of writing them.
